To Caribbean by Catamaran

All sailors have dreams. These dreams are getting bigger and bigger as years go by. Many dream of sailing around the world, but very few manage to accomplish it. To cross the Atlantic Ocean it is a challenge in itself, a more realistic goal by way of time and money. The easiest and safest way to do this is in the form of a competitive community, such as ARC (Atlantic Rally for Cruisers). ARC participation is highly beneficial, for both the safety aspects and the period of optimal weather, during which the race is conducted.

Our vessel is a French manufactured Lagoon 440, a new generation catamaran. The most radical advancement in new Lagoon 440 is the fly bridge where the boat is controlled (Helm).

Reijo Tsutsunen is the captain and owner of ‘Esmaralda’, an experienced sailor with this being his third generation of boat. This is Reijo’s second time to participate in ARC. Esmeralda’s home port is Palma Mallorca. If you would like more information of catamaran sailing and Lagoon boats you can contact Reijo from esmeralda@lagoon.fi

Jari (Jallu) Halmesuo is a self-employed property agent. When not working, Jari spends his time sailing in both fresh and salt water, a successful competitor in H-Class competitions. Some claim that they have seen Jallu being serious, which we have difficulty in believing. Even his hat has an insigna stating, “Don’t take it seriously”. As with Reijo, this too is his second participation in ARC.

Heikki (Hessu) Räisänen is an advertising entrepreneur from Helsinki. This is his first time to cross the Atlantic, also the first time he has been away from the office and mobile contact for this period in fifteen years. Hessu will celebrate his 44th birthday somewhere in the Atlantic. He started his sailing hobby by wind surfing, but when he outgrew his wetsuit he was forced to shift to larger vessels with larger sails.

Markku (Make) Teräväinen strongly beleives that competition ruins a great sport such as sailing, except in the case of ARC… of course! As a first timer in ARC, Make has sailed previously in the Caribbean and gladly volunteered to be the ARC boat chef.

With this crew, MS Esmeralda started a 2700 mile journey across the Atlantic Ocean on 21st of November 2004. The ARC starts from Las Palmas, Canary Isles and finishes in the island of St. Lucia, Caribean. It has been said that ARC is one of the biggest ocean sailing events in world. This year there will be approximately 200 boats and crew from all over the world.
